The reverse is the common side of the 2 euro coins of the second type, designed by Luc Luix (Royal Belgian Mint). Depicts a map of Europe as a single continent without internal borders - a symbol of European unity. On the left - a large denomination "2" and the inscription "EURO", on the right - a map with six thin horizontal lines in the background. On the outer ring - 12 stars of the European Union. The band - with thin ribbing and the inscription of five shields alternating with seven castles - motifs of the Portuguese coat of arms.
Historical context
The Portuguese Presidency of the Council of the European Union 2021 is the fourth in the country's history (after 1992, 2000, 2007), lasting from 1 January to 30 June 2021. The motto of the presidency is "Time to act: for a fair, green and digital recovery" (Hora de Agir: por uma recuperação justa, verde e digital). Prime Minister - António Costa (Socialist). The Presidency took place in the extremely challenging circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic, which led to special attention: the adoption of NextGenerationEU (a €750 billion recovery fund); the implementation of the European Green Deal; Europe's digital transition; strengthening the EU's strategic autonomy. Among the main events: the Social Summit in Porto (7-8 May 2021) - signing of the Porto Declaration on Social Rights; adoption of the EU COVID-19 Certificate for the resumption of travel; launching the post-pandemic recovery process. Various trade agreements were also signed, and ties with Africa (especially Portuguese-speaking countries) were strengthened.
