Obverse
The center of the coin depicts the official logo of the World Youth Day 2023 - a stylized cross, heart and outline of the city. Above - "JORNADA MUNDIAL DA JUVENTUDE", below - "LISBOA 2023 PORTUGAL". INCM mark. On the outer ring - 12 five-pointed stars of the European Union.
Reverse
The reverse is the common side of the 2 euro coins of the second type, designed by Luc Luix (Royal Belgian Mint). Depicts a map of Europe as a single continent without internal borders - a symbol of European unity. On the left - a large denomination "2" and the inscription "EURO", on the right - a map with six thin horizontal lines on the background. On the outer ring - 12 stars of the European Union. The band - with thin ribbing and an inscription of five shields alternating with seven castles - motifs of the Portuguese coat of arms.
Historical context
World Youth Day (Jornada Mundial da Juventude) is a religious event of the Catholic Church, held once every 2-3 years, uniting millions of young Catholics from all over the world. Introduced by Pope John Paul II in 1985. The Lisbon World Youth Day 2023 took place from 1 to 6 August 2023 - this is the 16th international WYD since its inception. It was attended by about 1.5 million young Catholics from 151 countries - the largest event in the history of Portugal. Pope Francis visited Lisbon, held several events: a meeting with young people in Eduardo VII Park (August 3), the Stations of the Cross (August 4), the Great Vigil (August 5) and the Final Holy Mass on August 6 at the Grata Campus in the Parque de las Nações area - it was attended by about 1.5 million people. The slogan was "Maria levantão-se e partiu apressadamente" (Mary got up and left in haste - Luke 1:39). The preparations were led by Cardinal Manuel Clemente, Patriarch of Lisbon. The event had a great impact on Portugal - economically, culturally and spiritually.
