Obverse
The center of the coin depicts a stylized figure of an athlete in a dynamic pose. Next to it are the Olympic rings and the emblem of Paris-2024. Above — «JOGOS OLÍMPICOS PARIS 2024», below — «PORTUGAL 2024». INCM mark. On the outer ring are the 12 five-pointed stars of the European Union.
Reverse
The reverse is the common side of the 2 euro coins of the second type, designed by Luc Luix (Royal Belgian Mint). It depicts a map of Europe as a single continent without internal borders - a symbol of European unity. On the left is a large denomination "2" and the inscription "EURO", on the right is a map with six thin horizontal lines in the background. On the outer ring are the 12 stars of the European Union. The band is finely fluted and features five shields alternating with seven castles, motifs from the Portuguese coat of arms.
Historical context
The 2024 Summer Olympics (XXXIII Olympiad) were held in Paris, France, from 26 July to 11 August 2024. They were the third Olympics in Paris (previously in 1900 and 1924), coinciding with the 100th anniversary of the previous Paris Games. They were attended by 10,714 athletes from 204 countries and refugee teams. The famous opening ceremony was held on the Seine River, the first opening ceremony outside a stadium. The games were held at 35 sports venues, including historic landmarks: the Grand Palais, Place de la Concorde, Versailles, and the Eiffel Tower. The United States won the medal count (40 gold, 126 total), followed by China (40 gold), and Japan (3rd). The Portuguese Olympic team for Paris 2024 consisted of around 70 athletes competing in 16 sports. Portugal's highlights: 4 medals (1 silver, 3 bronze): silver for Iolan Núñez in badminton; bronzes for Patricia Sampaio in judo, Fernando Pimenta in canoeing, and João Almeida in cycling.
