Historical context
Rotary International is an international professional charitable organization founded by American lawyer Paul Harris on February 23, 1905 in Chicago (USA). The name "Rotary" comes from the custom of rotating the location of meetings between the offices of the founding members. Today, Rotary clubs operate in over 200 countries and geographical areas, with about 1.4 million members in over 46,000 clubs. The motto is "Service Above Self". Rotary works in many areas of charity: polio eradication (PolioPlus vaccination since 1985), malaria control, clean water, literacy, peace, economic development. The first Rotary club in Portugal was founded in Lisbon in 1926 - this makes Portugal one of the first countries in Europe where Rotary appeared. Today, Portugal has over 200 clubs with thousands of members, united in District 1960 (includes Portugal, Cape Verde, São Tomé and Príncipe). Portuguese Rotary clubs actively fund educational scholarships, medical programs, and humanitarian aid.
