Reverse
The reverse is the common side of the 2 euro coins of the second type, designed by Luc Luix (Royal Belgian Mint). It depicts a map of Europe as a single continent without internal borders - a symbol of European unity. On the left - a large denomination "2" and the inscription "EURO", on the right - a map with six thin horizontal lines in the background. On the outer ring - 12 stars of the European Union. The band - with thin ribbing and an inscription with five shields alternating with seven castles - motifs of the Portuguese coat of arms.
Historical context
The Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation (Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian) is a Portuguese private charitable foundation, one of the richest private foundations in Europe. Founded in 1956 in Lisbon according to the will of the Armenian-British philanthropist and oil magnate Calouste Sarkis Gulbenkian (1869-1955), who spent the last 13 years of his life in Lisbon at the Avenida Palace Hotel. After World War II, Gulbenkian donated his vast fortune (especially 5% of the shares of the Iraqi Petroleum Company) to Portugal. The foundation's mission: the development of education, arts, charity and science. Located in a complex in Lisbon (Gulbenkian Park), which includes: the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum (with its outstanding collection of ancient Egyptian, Greek, Roman art, European and Islamic treasures - about 6,000 exhibits), the Museum of Modern Art, the Concert Hall, the Library. The foundation finances thousands of grants and scholarships every year. It celebrates its 70th anniversary in 2026.
