Historical context
Giorgio Vasari (July 30, 1511 - June 27, 1574) was an Italian painter, architect, art historian, and founder of art history as a discipline. He was born in Arezzo in the province of Tuscany. He was educated in the workshops of Guglielmo da Marchiglia and Andrea del Sarto. He worked at the Medici court in Florence - for Duke Cosimo I. As an architect, he designed the famous Palazzo degli Uffizi in Florence (1560-1581) - now one of the most famous museums in the world - and the Vasari Corridor, connecting the Uffizi with the Palazzo Pitti. As a painter, he painted frescoes in the Hall of the Five Hundred in the Palazzo Vecchio. His greatest contribution is the two-volume "Le Vite de' più eccellenti pittori, scultori e architettori" (Lives of the Most Eminent Painters, Sculptors and Architects, 1550, revised and expanded 1568). This is the first systematic history of Renaissance art in history - biographies of over 200 artists from Cimabue to Michelangelo. Vasari is the creator of the concept of the "Renaissance" (Rinascita) as an era.
