Obverse
The center of the coin depicts a stylized portrait of Giacomo Puccini in his characteristic appearance - with a mustache, in a suit. Next to it is a musical line from his opera or a symbolic image of the opera. At the top is "San Marino". At the bottom is "PUCCINI" and the dates "1924-2014". Mark "R". On the outer ring are the 12 five-pointed stars of the European Union.
Reverse
The reverse is the common side of the 2 euro coins of the second type, designed by Luc Luix (Royal Belgian Mint). It depicts a map of Europe as a single continent without internal borders - a symbol of European unity. On the left is a large denomination "2" and the inscription "EURO", on the right is a map with six thin horizontal lines in the background. On the outer ring are the 12 stars of the European Union. The band is finely grooved, with the inscription "2 ★" repeated 6 times, alternately upright and inverted.
Historical context
Giacomo Puccini (Giacomo Antonio Domenico Michele Secondo Maria Puccini, December 22, 1858 - November 29, 1924) was an outstanding Italian opera composer, the most influential representative of late romantic verismo. He was born in Lucca (Tuscany) in the fifth generation of musicians. He was educated at the Milan Conservatory under Amilcare Ponchielli. His first opera "Le Villi" (1884) brought him to the attention of the publisher Giulio Ricordi. World fame was brought by "Manon Lescaut" (1893), "La Bohème" (1896), "Tosca" (1900), "Madama Butterfly" (1904), "La fanciulla del West" (The Girl from the West, 1910), "Trittico" (Trilogy, 1918), "Turandot" (Turandot, unfinished at his death, premiered in 1926). Puccini is a master of melody, orchestral color, and psychological truthfulness. He died on November 29, 1924 in Brussels from laryngeal cancer. His operas are among the most frequently performed in the world. In 2024, the 100th anniversary of his death was celebrated.
