Historical context
The International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development (IY2017) is a UN initiative, proclaimed in 2017 by resolution 70/193 of the General Assembly of 22 December 2015. The aim was to raise awareness of the role of tourism in sustainable development, in achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for 2015-2030. Tourism is one of the largest and fastest growing sectors of the world economy: about 10% of global GDP, 1 in 10 jobs, $1 trillion in exports each year. However, it can also have negative consequences: environmental (environmental destruction), social (over-tourism), cultural (loss of authenticity). Sustainable tourism is a concept of tourism that minimizes negative impacts and maximizes positive ones: economic benefits for local communities, environmental protection, respect for cultural heritage, and tourist well-being. San Marino is a microstate that is heavily dependent on tourism (over 2 million visitors each year with a population of 33,000). Therefore, this coin is particularly relevant for the country.
