Overse
The center of the coin depicts a fragment of Bernini's famous sculpture "The Ecstasy of Saint Teresa" (1647-1652) from the Roman church of Santa Maria della Vittoria, or a self-portrait of the artist. At the top is "San Marino". At the bottom is "BERNINI" and the dates "1598-2018". Mark "R". On the outer ring are the 12 five-pointed stars of the EU.
Reverse
The reverse is the common side of the 2 euro coins of the second type, designed by Luc Luix (Royal Belgian Mint). It depicts a map of Europe as a single continent without internal borders - a symbol of European unity. On the left is a large denomination "2" and the inscription "EURO", on the right is a map with six thin horizontal lines. On the outer ring are the 12 stars of the European Union. The rim is finely fluted, with the inscription "2 ★" repeated 6 times.
Historical context
Gian Lorenzo Bernini (December 7, 1598 - November 28, 1680) was the most prominent Italian sculptor, architect, and painter of the Baroque era, the main artist of papal Rome in the 17th century. He was born in Naples, the son of the sculptor Pietro Bernini. In 1606, the family moved to Rome. He worked for Popes Urban VIII, Innocent X, Alexander VII, Clement IX, Clement X. Masterpieces: sculptures "Apollo and Daphne" (1622-1625), "Ecstasy of Saint Teresa" (1647-1652), "The Abduction of Proserpina", "David"; architecture — Colonnade of St. Peter's Square in the Vatican (1656-1667), Baldachin in St. Peter's Basilica (1624-1633), Palazzo Barberini; numerous fountains in Rome (Fountain of the Four Rivers, 1648-1651). Bernini dominated Roman art for over half a century. He died on November 28, 1680 in Rome.
