Obverse
The center of the coin depicts a fragment of Tiepolo's famous frescoes in the Residence in Würzburg (1751-1753) or a stylized self-portrait of the artist. At the top is "San Marino". At the bottom is "TIEPOLO" and the dates "1770-2020". Mark "R". On the ring are the 12 stars of the EU.
Reverse
The reverse is the common side of the 2 euro coins of the second type, designed by Luc Luix (Royal Belgian Mint). It depicts a map of Europe as a single continent without internal borders - a symbol of European unity. On the left is a large denomination "2" and the inscription "EURO", on the right is a map with six thin horizontal lines. On the outer ring are the 12 stars of the European Union. The rim is finely fluted, with the inscription "2 ★" repeated 6 times.
Historical context
Giovanni Battista Tiepolo (March 5, 1696 - March 27, 1770) was an outstanding Italian painter, graphic artist, the last great master of the Venetian school of the 18th century, the most significant representative of the late Baroque-Rococo. He was born in Venice into a merchant family. He was a student of Gregorio Lazarini. In 1716 he became a member of the Painters' Guild. He is famous for his bright, full of space and light frescoes with brilliant perspectives, spectacular compositions, and virtuoso brushwork. Among the most famous works: the frescoes of the Palazzo Labia in Venice from the story of Antony and Cleopatra (c. 1746); a monumental cycle of frescoes in the Prince-Bishop's Residence in Würzburg (Treppenhaus and Kaisersaal, 1751-1753) - the largest fresco in the world (677 m²) above the grand staircase; frescoes in the Palazzo Reale in Madrid (1762-1770), where he was invited by King Charles III. He died in Spain on March 27, 1770.
