Historical context
Antonio Canova (November 1, 1757 - October 13, 1822) - the most prominent Italian sculptor of neoclassicism, the most influential sculptor of the late 18th - early 19th centuries. Born in Possagno (Veneto). Educated in Venice under Giuseppe Bernardi. In 1779 he moved to Rome, where he spent most of his life. Canova's style is a revival of ancient Greek sculpture in the spirit of "calm nobility and quiet grandeur" (Winckelmann). Among his famous works: "Theseus defeats the Minotaur" (1781-1782), "Cupid and Psyche" (1788-1793, Louvre), "Pauline Borghese as Venus Victorious" (1804-1808), "The Three Graces" (1813-1817, Hermitage), numerous portraits of Napoleon and his family. He worked for the popes, Napoleon, the Russian Tsar, and English aristocrats. His noble title is Marquis of Ischia. He died on October 13, 1822 in Venice.
