Historical context
Luca Signorelli (full name Luca d'Egidio di Ventura, c. 1445 - October 16, 1523) - an outstanding Italian artist of the Early Renaissance, originally from Cortona (Tuscany). A student of Piero della Francesca. He worked in various cities of central Italy - Florence, Perugia, Cortona, Orvieto, Siena, Loreto. He became famous as a master of monumental frescoes with dynamic muscular bodies and complex compositions, which influenced Michelangelo. The most outstanding masterpiece is the fresco cycle in the chapel of San Brizio in the cathedral of Orvieto (1499-1504), on the theme of the End of the World and the Last Judgment: "Antichrist", "Resurrection of the Flesh", "The Damned in Hell", "The Blessed in Paradise". This cycle is considered the direct predecessor of Michelangelo's "Last Judgment" in the Sistine Chapel (1536-1541). He died on October 16, 1523 in Cortona.
