Historical context

Domenico Ghirlandaio (real name Domenico di Tommaso Curradi di Doffo Bigordi, January 11, 1448 - January 11, 1494) was an outstanding Florentine artist of the Early Renaissance, the most important master of portrait and narrative fresco art in Florence in the 1480s. He was born in Florence into a family of a jeweler. The surname "Ghirlandaio" (from garland) means "garland master" - his father specialized in making garland wreaths from silver. He received his education in the workshop of Alesso Baldovinetti. He became famous for a series of frescoes in Florence: the Sassetti Chapel in Santa Trita (1483-1486), the Tornabuoni Chapel in Santa Maria Novella (1485-1490) - a masterpiece of 25 frescoes about the lives of Mary and John the Baptist. He participated in the paintings of the Sistine Chapel in Rome (1481-1482) together with Botticelli and Perugino. His most prominent student was Michelangelo Buonarroti (a student in 1488-1489). He died on January 11, 1494 in Florence from the plague.
