Historical context

The Holy Jubilee of 2025 (Giubileo 2025, Latin Iubilaeum 2025) is an ordinary Holy Year of the Catholic Church, declared by Pope Francis with the bull Spes non confundit (Hope does not disappoint) on 9 May 2024. The motto is "Pilgrims of Hope" (Peregrinantes in Spe, Pellegrini di Speranza). It began solemnly on December 24, 2024, with the opening of the Holy Doors of St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican by Pope Francis and will end on January 6, 2026. The tradition of the Holy Jubilee Year dates back to 1300, when Pope Boniface VIII proclaimed the first Jubilee. Since then, Jubilees have usually been held every 25 years. The last ones: 1975 (Paul VI), 2000 (John Paul II - Great Jubilee), 2025 (Francis). It is expected that about 30 million pilgrims will visit Rome. Features: Holy Doors, pilgrimage routes, plenary indulgence. San Marino is a microstate surrounded by Italy, traditionally Catholic.
