He was born in Pieve di Cadore (Veneto) in the Dolomites. He was educated in Venice in the workshop of Giovanni Bellini, then Giorgione. After the early deaths of Giorgione (1510) and Bellini (1516), he became the main artist of Venice. He worked for over 60 years, creating hundreds of works. Among the famous ones: "Venus of Urbino" (1538, Uffizi), "Laying in the Tomb" (1559), "The Abduction of Europa" (1559-1562), "Saint Sebastian" (1570-1572), portraits of Emperor Charles V (Equestrian Portrait 1548, Prado), Pope Paul III, other monarchs. He worked for Charles V, who promoted him to Count Palatine, and for Philip II of Spain. He revolutionized painting with rich color, bold brushwork, and psychological depth. He died on August 27, 1576 in Venice from the plague.
