Historical context
Saint Francis of Assisi (San Francesco d'Assisi, real name Giovanni di Pietro Bernardone, 1181 or 1182 - October 3, 1226) is a Christian saint, founder of the Franciscan Order (Ordine dei Frati Minori, OFM), one of the most influential spiritual figures in Western Christianity. He was born in Assisi (Umbria) into a wealthy merchant family. In his youth, he was a zealous soldier and a secular man. In 1205, he experienced a spiritual conversion while praying before the crucifix in the church of San Damiano. He began a life of voluntary poverty, preaching repentance and love for the poor and all living creatures. In 1209 he founded the Franciscan Order with 12 followers. In 1212 he founded the Poor Clares order with Saint Clare of Assisi. He made a pilgrimage to the Holy Land in 1219, where he met Sultan al-Kamil. In 1224 he received the stigmata on Mount Alverna. He was canonized by Pope Gregory IX on July 16, 1228. Pope Pius XII declared him the patron saint of Italy in 1939.
