Historical context
The Statue of Liberty of San Marino (Statua della Libertà) was created by the Italian sculptor Stefano Galletti and donated to the republic in 1876 by Countess Otilia Heyroth Wagener of Berlin. The marble statue depicts Liberty as a warrior woman striding confidently forward with a flag in her hand; her head is crowned with three towers — the symbol of fortified San Marino from its coat of arms. The statue stands on Piazza della Libertà before the Public Palace and embodies the independence of one of the world’s oldest republics. This same image has long adorned San Marino’s 2-euro-cent coin. Such issues become little "time capsules": they preserve a cultural marker and recognizable symbolism for future generations.
