Obverse

The center of the coin depicts a stylized composition - the outlines of Slovakia against the background of the flag of the European Union with 12 stars, around the orbit of unity. Above - "10. VÝROČIE VSTUPU SR DO EÚ", below - "SLOVENSKO 2014" with the dates "2004-2014". Mark of the Kremnica Mint. On the outer ring are the 12 stars of the EU.

Reverse

The reverse is the common side of the 2 euro coins of the second type, designed by Luc Luix (Royal Belgian Mint). It depicts a map of Europe as a single continent without internal borders - a symbol of European unity. On the left is a large denomination "2" and the inscription "EURO", on the right is a map with six thin horizontal lines. On the outer ring are the 12 stars of the European Union. The band is finely fluted and has the inscription "SLOVENSKÁ REPUBLIKA" with two linden leaves.

Historical context

Slovakia became a member of the European Union on 1 May 2004 as part of the largest enlargement in the history of the EU, when 10 new countries joined at the same time: the Czech Republic, Cyprus, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Slovakia, and Slovenia. This marked the completion of a 15-year integration process after the 1989 Gentle Revolution. Slovakia applied for EU membership in June 1995, accession negotiations began in 2000 and were completed in 2002. The Accession Agreement was signed on 16 April 2003 in Athens. In a referendum on 16–17 May 2003, 92.5% of Slovaks voted in favour of accession. The Prime Minister at the time of accession was Mikulas Dzurinda. The President was Rudolf Schuster. Accession to the EU was a key foreign policy achievement of the new Slovakia after gaining independence in 1993. In 2009, the country also joined the eurozone.
