Description

A 2 euro commemorative coin of the Slovak Republic, issued in 2015 in a circulation of 1,000,000 copies. Dedicated to the 200th anniversary of the birth of Ludovít Štúr. It was minted at Mincovňa Kremnica. Bimetallic, diameter 25.75 mm, weight 8.5 g.

Obverse

The center of the coin depicts a stylized portrait of Ludovít Štúr in profile. Above — "ĽUDOVÍT ŠTÚR", below — "SLOVENSKO" and the dates "1815-2015". On the right — the mark of the Kremnica Mint. On the outer ring — 12 five-pointed EU stars.

Reverse

The reverse is the common side of the 2 euro coins of the second type, designed by Luc Luix (Royal Belgian Mint). It depicts a map of Europe as a single continent without internal borders - a symbol of European unity. On the left - a large denomination "2" and the inscription "EURO", on the right - a map with six thin horizontal lines. On the outer ring - 12 stars of the European Union. The band - with thin grooves and the inscription "SLOVENSKÁ REPUBLIKA" with two linden leaves.

Historical context

Ľudovít Velislav Štúr (October 28, 1815 - January 12, 1856) - the most prominent Slovak public and political figure, linguist, poet, journalist, leader of the Slovak national revival of the 19th century. He was born in Uchov (then the Kingdom of Hungary, now Slovakia) in the family of an evangelical teacher. He was educated at the Bratislava Evangelical Lyceum and Halle (Germany). He taught at the Bratislava Lyceum. Štur's most important achievement was the codification of the modern literary Slovak language (1843-1846): before that, Slovaks wrote in Biblical Czech (bibličtina) or Latin. Štur, together with his associates Josef Gurban and Michael Hodžia, established the Slovak literary norm based on the Central Slovak dialect. In 1847-1848, he was a deputy of the Hungarian Sejm from the city of Zvolen. In the revolution of 1848-1849, he advocated Slovak national rights. He died on January 12, 1856 in Modra from wounds received while hunting.
