Obverse

It depicts a map of Europe as a single continent without internal borders - a symbol of European unity. On the left - a large denomination "2" and the inscription "EURO", on the right - a map with six thin horizontal lines. On the outer ring - 12 stars of the European Union. The edge - with thin ribbing and the inscription "SLOVENSKÁ REPUBLIKA" with two linden leaves.

Historical context

The first Slovak presidency of the Council of the European Union lasted from 1 July to 31 December 2016. The motto is "Sustained progress, stronger Europe". The Prime Minister at the time was Robert Fico. The President of the European Council was Donald Tusk. This period was marked by important challenges for the EU: the migration crisis (over 1 million refugees have arrived in Europe since 2015), the consequences of the Brexit referendum (the UK voted to leave the EU on 23 June 2016), the issues of the digital single market, energy security, and the common security policy. Slovakia organized an informal summit in Bratislava on 16 September 2016, the first summit of the "27" (without the UK), where the Bratislava Declaration and the Roadmap were adopted. Among the achievements of the presidency were the extension of the EU-US Interim Agreement on the exchange of airline passenger data, the real estate and air transport directives.
