Historical context
Trenčín is one of the oldest cities in Slovakia, located in the west of the country, on the Váh River. Founded in Roman times (2nd-3rd centuries AD, the Roman camp of Laugaricio stood here). The most famous landmark is Trenčín Castle (Trenčiansky hrad), one of the largest and best castles in Slovakia, built in the 11th-15th centuries. On the castle rock is the famous Roman inscription of 179 AD, the northernmost of the known Roman inscriptions in Europe. The city has a rich medieval history, was the center of the Trenčín County in the Kingdom of Hungary. In 2026, Trenčín received the status of European Capital of Culture together with Uddevalla (Sweden) and San Marino. This honorary title has been awarded by the EU annually since 1985 to promote cultural diversity and European identity. A rich cultural program is expected - festivals, exhibitions, concerts, conferences throughout 2026.
