Historical context

The Botanical Garden of Ljubljana (Botanični vrt Univerze v Ljubljani) is the oldest botanical garden in Southeastern Europe and the most important botanical center in Slovenia. Founded in 1810 by order of the French Governor-General of the Illyrian Provinces, Marshal Auguste Marmont. At that time, Slovenia was part of the Illyrian Provinces of the Napoleonic Empire (1809-1813). The first director was the Slovenian botanist and physician Francišek Hausman (Franc Hladnik). The garden is located near the Ljubljana River, covering an area of about 2 hectares. The collection includes over 4,500 species and subspecies of plants from all over the world - a particularly rich representation of Slovenian and Balkan flora, alpine plants, tropical species in greenhouses. The garden has been part of the University of Ljubljana since 1920 - it is used for scientific research and education. Among its special treasures are old trees planted in the 19th century.
