The center of the coin depicts a stylized Roman figure - the most famous find from Emona, a bronze statuette "Citizen of Emona" (Emonec). Above - "EMONA", below - "SLOVENIJA 2015" with the dates "MMXV". Utrecht Mint mark. On the outer ring - 12 five-pointed EU stars.
Reverse
The reverse is the common side of the 2 euro coins of the second type, designed by Luc Luix (Royal Belgian Mint). It depicts a map of Europe as a single continent without internal borders - a symbol of European unity. On the left - a large denomination "2" and the inscription "EURO", on the right - a map with six thin horizontal lines. On the outer ring - 12 stars of the European Union. The band - with thin ribbing and the inscription "SLOVENIJA ★", repeated.
Historical context
Emona (Colonia Iulia Emona) is an ancient Roman city, the predecessor of modern Ljubljana (Slovenia), founded around 14-15 AD. during the time of Emperor Augustus on the site of a former Celtic settlement. Located at a strategic crossroads of important Roman roads - the Amber Road (Aquileia-Carnuntum). Emona had the status of a Roman colony and covered an area of about 25 hectares. The city had about 5,000 inhabitants. Among the famous finds is the bronze statuette "Citizen of Emona" (Emonec) - a symbolic image of a wealthy Roman citizen in a toga. Among the ruins of Emona, preserved in modern Ljubljana: fragments of city walls, the foundation of an early Christian basilica, a Roman villa. The city flourished in the 1st-4th centuries, and declined during the era of the Great Migration of Peoples (5th century). In 2015, the 2000th anniversary of the Roman city was celebrated - an important anniversary in Slovenian history.
