Historical context

Slovenia joined the euro area on 1 January 2007, replacing the Slovenian tolar (SIT) with the euro at an exchange rate of 239.640 SIT = 1 euro. This made it the first Slavic country and the first of the new EU members after the 2004 enlargement to adopt the single currency. The transition was made two years after the application was submitted and was a recognition of the success of Slovenian economic reforms since independence in 1991. Banka Slovenije (Bank of Slovenia) became a member of the Eurosystem, with one member of the ECB Executive Board. The transition was smooth: from 1 to 14 January 2007, the tolar and the euro circulated in parallel. The exchange rates were initially set on 11 July 2006. European Central Bank President Jean-Claude Trichet visited Ljubljana for the launch of the euro. 2017 marked the 10th anniversary of this important stage in Slovenia's European integration.
