Historical context
World Bee Day is an annual celebration on May 20, proclaimed by the UN General Assembly by resolution 72/211 of December 20, 2017 at the initiative of Slovenia. The date of May 20 was chosen as the birthday of the Slovenian beekeeper-innovator Anton Janša (Anton Janša, 1734-1773), who is considered the father of modern beekeeping. Janša became the first teacher of beekeeping at the Vienna Imperial School. The aim of the Day is to raise awareness of the importance of bees and other pollinators for the ecosystem, food security and biodiversity. Bees are critically important for pollinating about 75% of food crops. However, they are at risk from pesticides, habitat loss, and diseases (varroatosis). Slovenia is the country with the highest density of beekeepers in the world (5 per 1,000 inhabitants). The famous Carniolan bee (Apis mellifera carnica) originates from Slovenia, the second most common species in the world.
