The center of the coin depicts a stylized historical building of the University of Ljubljana - a characteristic facade with columns. Above - "100 LET UNIVERZE V LJUBLJANI", below - "SLOVENIJA" with the dates "1919-2019". Utrecht Mint mark. On the outer ring - 12 stars of the EU.
Reverse
The reverse is the common side of the 2 euro coins of the second type, designed by Luc Luix (Royal Belgian Mint). It depicts a map of Europe as a single continent without internal borders - a symbol of European unity. On the left - a large denomination "2" and the inscription "EURO", on the right - a map with six thin horizontal lines. On the outer ring - 12 stars of the European Union. Edge - with thin ribbing and the inscription "SLOVENIJA ★", repeated.
Historical context
The University of Ljubljana (Univerza v Ljubljani, UL) is the oldest and largest university in Slovenia. Founded on July 23, 1919, based on the decision of the National Assembly of the State of Slovenes, Croats and Serbs - after the collapse of Austria-Hungary in 1918. Before that, Slovenian higher education was provided in Graz, Vienna, Prague, Zagreb. The first university consisted of 5 faculties: law, philosophy, technology, theology, medicine (opened in 1920). The first rector was Josip Plemel (mathematician). Currently, the university has 23 faculties and 3 academies, with over 40,000 students. Famous graduates and professors: Edvard Kardelj (politician), Josip Plemel, Anton Trenchevsky, Alojz Dellak, Damjan Prelovan. The university is located in various buildings in Ljubljana - the main historical building is the former Palace of the Kranj Province. In 2019, the 100th anniversary of this most important educational institution in Slovenia was celebrated.
