Historical context
Jože Plečnik (23 January 1872 - 7 January 1957) was the most prominent Slovenian architect of the 20th century, a central figure of Central European architecture. He was born in Ljubljana into a carpenter's family. He was educated in Graz, then in Vienna at the Academy of Fine Arts under Otto Wagner. He worked in Vienna, Prague, and Ljubljana. In 1911-1921, he was a professor in Prague, where he designed the reconstruction of Prague Castle for President Masaryk, as well as the famous Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Vinohrady. In 1921, he returned to Ljubljana, where he spent the rest of his life and shaped the architectural face of the city: the Triple Bridge (Tromostovje), the Ljubljana embankment, the Crow's Bridge, the National and University Library (NUK), the Flower Shop, and the Žale (cemetery). Plečnik's style is an original synthesis of classicism, baroque, and modernism. In 2021, his works in Ljubljana were included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. He died on January 7, 1957 in Ljubljana.
