Description

Commemorative coin of the Republic of Slovenia, 2 euros, issued in 2023 in a circulation of 1,000,000 copies. Dedicated to the 150th anniversary of Josip Plemel. Minted at the Royal Netherlands Mint. Bimetallic, diameter 25.75 mm, weight 8.5 g.

Obverse

The center of the coin depicts a stylized portrait of Josip Plemel with a fragment of his mathematical formula (the Sochotsky-Plemel formula). Above — "JOSIP PLEMELJ", below — "SLOVENIJA" with the dates "1873-2023". Utrecht Mint mark. On the outer ring are 12 five-pointed EU stars.

Reverse

The reverse is the common side of the 2 euro coins of the second type, designed by Luc Luix (Royal Belgian Mint). It depicts a map of Europe as a single continent without internal borders - a symbol of European unity. On the left - a large denomination "2" and the inscription "EURO", on the right - a map with six thin horizontal lines. On the outer ring are 12 stars of the European Union. The edge - with thin ribbing and the inscription "SLOVENIJA ★", repeated.

Historical context

Josip Plemelj (December 11, 1873 - May 22, 1967) was the most prominent Slovenian mathematician of the 20th century. He was born in Bled (Austria-Hungary, now Slovenia). He was educated at the University of Vienna (1894-1898) under the supervision of Gustav von Escherich. He defended his doctoral dissertation in 1898 on linear differential equations. He worked at the University of Chernivtsi (1908-1917), then at the University of Graz. In 1919, he became the first rector of the newly established University of Ljubljana and a professor of mathematics there until 1957. Among his most famous mathematical results are the Sochocki-Plemel formulas for boundary values ​​of analytic functions (1908), the solution of the Riemann-Hilbert problem for the case of the 21st Hilbert problem (1908). Author of over 100 scientific papers and textbooks. Member of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences (since 1938) and the Yugoslav Academy of Sciences (since 1947). He died on May 22, 1967 in Ljubljana.
