Obverse
The center of the coin depicts a stylized profile of Ivan Cankar. Above — "IVAN CANKAR", below — "SLOVENIJA" with the dates "1876-2026". On the right — the Utrecht mint mark. On the outer ring — 12 five-pointed stars of the EU.
Reverse
The reverse is the common side of the 2 euro coins of the second type, designed by Luc Luix (Royal Belgian Mint). Depicts a map of Europe as a single continent without internal borders - a symbol of European unity. On the left - a large denomination "2" and the inscription "EURO", on the right - a map with six thin horizontal lines. On the outer ring - 12 stars of the European Union. The band - with thin grooves and the inscription "SLOVENIJA ★", repeated.
Historical context
Ivan Cankar (May 10, 1876 - December 11, 1918) - the most prominent Slovenian writer, playwright, poet, essayist, politician, founder of modern Slovenian prose. Born in Vrhnica near Ljubljana in a poor family. He received his education in Ljubljana (gymnasium) and Vienna (engineering, then Slavic studies, did not complete). He spent most of his life in Vienna (1898-1909, 1911-1913), where he became acquainted with modern European literature, symbolism, and expressionism. He wrote dozens of novels, short stories, and plays. Among the most famous works are: "Hlapec Jernej in njegova pravica" (Jernej's Servant and His Truth, 1907), "Na klancu" (On the Slope, 1902), "Hiša Marije Pomočnice" (House of Mary Help of Christians, 1904), "Martin Kačur" (1906), and the dramas "Kralj na Betajnovi" (1902), "Pohujšanje v dolini šentflorjanski" (1908). An active politician and social democrat. In 1913, he was imprisoned by the Austro-Hungarian authorities for his anti-war views. Died on December 11, 1918 in Ljubljana from the consequences of a fall.
