Historical context
The XXVIII World Youth Day was held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from 23 to 28 July 2013. It was the first major international event of the newly elected Pope Francis, who became the 266th Pope on 13 March 2013 following the voluntary resignation of Benedict XVI. The theme of the World Youth Day was "Go and make disciples of all nations" (Matthew 28:19). Some 3.7 million young pilgrims from 175 countries attended the event. The event culminated in a closing mass on Copacabana Beach on 28 July, attended by over 3 million people, one of the largest religious gatherings in Brazilian history. For Pope Francis, the first pontiff from Latin America, it was a symbolic return to his native continent.
