Historical context
The World Meetings of Families are international Catholic meetings initiated by Pope John Paul II in 1994. They are held every three years in different cities around the world. The VIII World Meeting of Families was held in Philadelphia (USA) from 22 to 27 September 2015 - the first in an English-speaking country and in the United States. The theme of the meeting was "Love is our mission: the family fully alive". About a million pilgrims came to the culminating Mass on 27 September in Benjamin Franklin Park, which was celebrated by Pope Francis. The meeting was part of Pope Francis' first historic visit to the United States (22-27 September), during which he also addressed the US Congress and the UN.
