The coin captures the historical step of Ukraine's European path and preserves it in metal as a sign of hope. The plot and design details emphasize the theme: it is dedicated to Wilhelm Franz von Habsburg-Lothringen (1895–1948) - a representative of the European aristocracy, who entered the history of Ukraine under the pseudonym Vasyl Vyshyvany.
Overse
The obverse presents the theme through a combination of state symbols, inscriptions and a finely thought-out relief. 1914 (the year of the Legion's foundation) year of minting 2025, small State Emblem of Ukraine, denomination 2 with a graphic sign of the hryvnia, a stylized feather - a symbol of his poetic and diplomatic activities, the sign of the Banknote and Mint of the National Bank of Ukraine and the inscription WILHELM VON HABSBURG (below). The mirror surface shows: the inscription UKRAINE and a facsimile of Vasyl Vyshyvany's signature (in the upper part). The obverse of the coin shows a stylized composition containing an element of the cockade of the Ukrainian Sich Riflemen Legion - a heraldic Galician lion, which rests on a stone block with an inscription. European symbolism is delicately integrated, and the plot conveys a sense of historical step and hope. The state emblem in the composition sets the official tone and balances the decorative elements. The corporate emblem of the NBU Banknote and Mint emphasizes the official origin of the issue.
Reverse
The reverse is the central story of the coin: the symbols are arranged so that the plot "comes to life" under different angles of light. In the upper part above the composition, the inscription VASIL VYSHIVANY is indicated in an arc, and on the right side - the years of his life 1895-1948, on the left side - a decorative ornament with clover leaves, which was a talisman of military luck for the soldiers of the Ukrainian SSR and decorated the cover of his poetry collection "Days are Passing...", dedicated to the fighters for the freedom of Ukraine. The reverse of the coin shows a stylized portrait of Vasyl Vyshyvany in an embroidered shirt and a fur coat - elements of clothing that have become part of his personal identity. European symbolism is delicately integrated, and the plot conveys a sense of a historical step and hope.
Historical context
On June 23, 2022, the European Council granted Ukraine the status of a candidate country for accession to the EU - a decision that fixed the long-term course of European integration. The event became a sign of solidarity and faith in the future of Ukraine, and the symbolism of Europe on the coin emphasizes the idea of "returning home" to a common space of values.
