The coin captures a historical step on Ukraine's European path and preserves it in metal as a sign of hope. The plot and design details emphasize the theme: dedicated to the scientific research institute "Mykolaiv Astronomical Observatory" - one of the oldest observatories in Eastern Europe, founded in 1821 as a marine observatory.
Obverse
The obverse presents the theme through a combination of state symbols, inscriptions and finely crafted relief. Denomination - FIVE HRYVYN (at the bottom in an arc). On the obverse of the coin, against the background of a stylized fragment of the globe, the following are noticeable: the small State Emblem of Ukraine (in the upper part), the inscriptions: 2021 (above the emblem), UKRAINE (below the emblem), in the center - the historical building of the Mykolaiv Astronomical Observatory, which has a special design, an original round hall, masonry, etc., the sign of the Banknote and Mint of the National Bank of Ukraine (on the right side). European symbolism is delicately integrated, and the plot conveys a sense of historical step and hope. The state emblem in the composition sets the official tone and balances the decorative elements. The corporate emblem of the Banknote and Mint of the NBU emphasizes the official origin of the issue.
Reverse
The reverse is the central story of the coin: the symbols are arranged so that the plot "comes to life" under different angles of light. Inscriptions: 200 YEARS OF THE MYKOLAIV ASTRONOMICAL OBSERVATORY (in a circle). The reverse of the coin features astronomical instruments: on the mirror surface – a meridian circle, on both sides of which are the inscriptions: 1821 (on the left side), 2021 (on the right side) above it on a matte field: an image of the symbolic center of the Mykolaiv Astronomical Observatory with its coordinates determined by the first director of the observatory, Karl von Knorre (on the left side) and the silhouette of an optical device – a sextant (on the right side). European symbolism is delicately integrated, and the plot conveys a sense of historical step and hope. The texture of the field shows noticeable relief transitions: from thin strokes to deeper areas that catch the light beautifully when the coin is turned.
Historical context
On June 23, 2022, the European Council granted Ukraine the status of a candidate country for accession to the EU — a decision that fixed the long-term course of European integration. The event became a sign of solidarity and faith in the future of Ukraine, and the symbolism of Europe on the coin emphasizes the idea of "returning home" to a common space of values.
