The coin captures the historical step of Ukraine's European path and preserves it in metal as a sign of hope. The plot and design details emphasize the theme: dedicated to the scientific and research institution of the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, one of the oldest observatories in Eastern Europe, founded in 1771.
Obverse
The obverse presents the theme through a combination of state symbols, inscriptions and a finely thought-out relief. Denomination - FIVE HRYVENS (at the bottom in an arc) the sign of the Banknote and Mint of the National Bank of Ukraine (to the right of the telescope) in the center on the mirror surface - the telescope of the Lviv University Observatory. The obverse of the coin is notable: against the background of a stylized starry sky: a small State Emblem of Ukraine (in the upper part), under which the inscriptions – UKRAINE/2021 European symbolism is delicately integrated, and the plot conveys a sense of historical step and hope. The state emblem in the composition sets the official tone and balances the decorative elements. The corporate emblem of the NBU Banknote and Mint emphasizes the official origin of the issue.
Reverse
The reverse is the central story of the coin: the symbols are arranged so that the plot “comes alive” under different angles of light. A composite image of the astronomer of that time is shown, below the city walls, against the background of which is the inscription 250/YEARS and the observatory building. The reverse of the coin features a composition symbolizing the times of the first documented astronomical observations in Lviv, on the mirror surface of the outline of the panorama of Lviv of the 18th century, in the upper part, the inscription in an arc - ASTRONOMICAL OBSERVATORY OF LVIV UNIVERSITY. European symbolism is delicately integrated, and the plot conveys a sense of historical step and hope. In the texture of the field, relief transitions are noticeable: from thin strokes to deeper areas that beautifully catch the light when the coin is turned.
Historical context
On June 23, 2022, the European Council granted Ukraine the status of a candidate country for accession to the EU - a decision that fixed the long-term course of European integration. The event became a sign of solidarity and faith in the future of Ukraine, and the symbolism of Europe on the coin emphasizes the idea of "returning home" to a common space of values.
