The coin captures the historical step of Ukraine's European path and preserves it in metal as a sign of hope. The plot and design details emphasize the theme: dedicated to the unity of Ukraine with Europe, our common values, and the desire for a peaceful and prosperous future. The celebration of Europe Day in Ukraine testifies not only to the geographical affiliation of our state to the European continent, but also to deep mental, cultural, and value integration.
Obverse
The obverse presents the theme through a combination of state symbols, inscriptions, and a finely crafted relief. To the left of the trident is the official motto of the European Union UNITY IN DIVERSITY (in the upper part in an arc) and the inscription UKRAINE (next to the trident, vertically). At the bottom of the coin, the denomination 5 with the graphic symbol of the hryvnia, the year of minting – 2024 (vertically) and the small State Emblem of Ukraine are indicated. On the right side of the trident, a floral ornament is shown, symbolizing the prosperity and distinctive culture of the state, as well as the sign of the Banknote and Mint of the National Bank of Ukraine. On the obverse of the coin, a stylized trident, the symbol of Ukraine, is noticeably stylized in the center. European symbolism is delicately integrated, and the plot conveys a sense of historical step and hope. The state emblem in the composition sets the official tone and balances the decorative elements. The corporate emblem of the Banknote and Mint of the NBU emphasizes the official origin of the issue.
Reverse
The reverse side reveals the main image of the issue in expressive relief and multi-layered composition. On the reverse of the coin, the abbreviations EU and UA are visible on the mirror surface, which, intertwining, create a visual symbol of the unity of Ukraine and Europe. Twelve stars are shown around the inscriptions ДЕНЬ / ЕВРОПЫ / EUROPE / DAY, as on the EU flag, symbolizing the unity, integrity and harmony of the peoples of Europe. The two letters “U” are as if one whole, forming the image of a new life sprouting under the auspices of the European Union. European symbolism is delicately integrated, and the plot conveys a sense of a historical step and hope. The texture of the field shows noticeable relief transitions: from thin strokes to deeper areas that beautifully catch the light when the coin is turned.
Historical context
On June 23, 2022, the European Council granted Ukraine the status of a candidate country for accession to the EU — a decision that fixed the long-term course of European integration. The event became a sign of solidarity and faith in the future of Ukraine, and the symbolism of Europe on the coin emphasizes the idea of "returning home" to a common space of values.
