Historical context
Sustainable development (Desenvolvimento Sustentável, English: Sustainable Development) is a concept of development that meets the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. This concept was proposed in the report "Our Common Future" (1987) of the UN Brundtland Commission. In September 2015, the UN General Assembly adopted the resolution “Transforming our world: The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development” (Agenda 2030) with 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): 1) End poverty; 2) End hunger; 3) Good health and well-being; 4) Quality education; 5) Gender equality; 6) Clean water; 7) Clean energy; 8) Decent work; 9) Industry, innovation, infrastructure; 10) Reduced inequalities; 11) Sustainable cities and communities; 12) Responsible consumption; 13) Climate action; 14) Marine conservation; 15) Protection of terrestrial ecosystems; 16) Peace, justice, institutions; 17) Partnerships for the goals. Portugal is actively implementing the SDGs.
